Hitting the Streets with Valerie Jardin

A Street Photography Workshop with Valerie Jardin? Sign me up! Valerie is a well-known, French-born street photographer, blogger, and podcast host of Street Focus. Her work has been displayed in galleries in the US and Europe and she teaches workshops internationally. I was a lucky attendant of her most recent Minneapolis, MN workshop. Minnesota is where Valerie now calls home.

The weekend workshop was scheduled to coincide with the Friday Opening Reception of the “Meet Me Downtown” Street Photography Exhibit at the Mpls Photo Center. Seventy-five framed images chosen by Valerie from 700 entries were on display that evening and will be there through August 26, 2016. I didn’t enter the competition, so I didn’t even have a chance to win. ūüė¶

Many of Valerie’s images comprised a separate gallery, called Paris Je T‚Äôaime, on the same floor of¬†the Photo Center. It was a fun evening sipping wine, viewing images, and meeting Valerie and other street photographers. You can see a short video of¬†the evening here.

The Saturday/Sunday workshop started with introductions and a presentation about street photography to prepare us for the photowalks. Out first stop was Mill City Market which had fresh produce, live music, food trucks and handmade items. Here are a few of my favorite photos from that morning.

The group then went into the Guthrie Theater to work on silhouettes and anything else we could find.

The next morning we met at another Farmer’s Market, but this one was much larger and had more of a variety of items for sale. We met Valerie’s neighbor there selling jewelry.

It was at this location that Valerie suggested we choose a topic to photographic. I chose “stripes”.

Awwww….Sweetness x2

I followed this lady for some time. Loved the way her garment moved in the breeze.

It was good¬†to watch Valerie working in the field and learn from her. Every street photographer has a different style. The workshop ended with some post-processing time and sharing several of our favorite images for others to see and critique. I learned a bunch and made new friends. ūüôā

The Lady Who Sells Moravian Sugar Cake

A friend and I recently visited Old Salem, NC for an afternoon of photographing in the quaint old town. She mentioned Moravian Sugar Cake.¬†I had never heard of it, but was willing to give it a try. After all, something with “sugar” and “cake” in the name can’t be all that bad. We found the Sugar Cake at¬†Winkler Bakery. It was indeed excellent!

The lady who sells the cake, along with other baked goods and sweets, is a sweetheart. So pleasant and cheerful, she’ll brighten your day by just walking in the door. She allowed me to take her photo near the hearth. There was beautiful light coming into the room from a nearby window. Beautiful light on a beautiful person.
